How to Get More Etsy Reviews Without Breaking the Rules
By Ali Raza · 2026-10-02
What Etsy actually allows you to say about reviews, why most sellers quietly violate the policy, and the practical changes that raise your review rate — including the ones that happen before the order ever ships.
Reviews are the difference between a listing shoppers consider and one they scroll past. They also gate the Star Seller badge and quietly influence whether a browser becomes a buyer. So sellers chase them — and a lot of the advice floating around will get your shop in trouble.
What Etsy does not allow
Etsy's policy is stricter than most sellers realise. You must not:
- Offer anything in exchange for a review — no discounts, free gifts, refunds, coupons or entries into a draw. This includes "leave a review for 10% off your next order".
- Ask specifically for a 5-star or positive review. You can invite feedback; you cannot specify the rating.
- Pressure a buyer to change or remove a review, including repeated messages after they have left one.
The incentive one is the trap. The "leave a review, get a discount" card in the package is extremely common and is a straightforward policy violation. It also produces reviews Etsy may remove, so it does not even work reliably.
What you can do
You can include a neutral, non-incentivised note inviting honest feedback, and you can respond to reviews publicly. That is roughly it in terms of direct asking — which is why the real work happens elsewhere.
A note that stays inside the rules reads something like: "If you have a moment, honest feedback helps a small shop like mine enormously — and if anything is not right, message me first and I will sort it out."
That last clause is doing most of the work. It routes problems to you instead of to a 2-star review.
Most of your review rate is decided before you ship
The highest-leverage changes are not asks at all:
Set expectations the item can beat
Most bad reviews are not about quality — they are about surprise. Wrong size, colour that looked different on screen, arrived later than expected. Every one of those is preventable in the listing. Photograph the item in context with something for scale, state dimensions plainly, and set a processing time you can keep comfortably.
Make the unboxing match the listing
The gap between the photos and the item in hand is where ratings are decided. If your photos are heavily styled, the item has to hold up next to them. See product photography that converts — the same photos that win the click have to survive the comparison.
Answer problems fast and generously
A buyer who messages about a problem and gets a fast, no-argument resolution often leaves a better review than a buyer whose order was simply fine. A buyer who gets silence leaves the review you are afraid of.
Timing the invitation
Asking the moment the item ships is too early — they have not seen it. Asking weeks later is too late. A short, friendly message once delivery is confirmed, checking that everything arrived as expected, is well timed and reads as service rather than a request.
Keep it to one message. Following up repeatedly to chase a review crosses into pressure.
When you get a bad review
Reply publicly, briefly, and without arguing. Future shoppers read the reply more carefully than the review. A calm "Sorry this missed the mark — I have messaged you to put it right" tells every future buyer how you handle problems. Arguing in public costs far more sales than the review did.
You can also message the buyer once to offer a genuine fix. What you cannot do is make the fix conditional on changing the review.
If you have no reviews at all
The first few are the hardest, and there is no legitimate shortcut — buying reviews risks the shop entirely. What you can control is getting the early orders right: tight listings, realistic promises, quick replies. If the orders themselves are not arriving yet, that is a traffic problem rather than a review problem — see no sales on Etsy: what to do.
Frequently asked questions
Can I offer a discount for a review? No. Incentivising reviews in any form breaches Etsy's policy, and such reviews can be removed.
Can I ask for a 5-star review? No. You may invite honest feedback, but not request a specific rating.
Can I include a thank-you card asking for a review? A neutral note inviting honest feedback is fine. Attaching any reward to it is not.
Can I get a bad review removed? Only if it breaches Etsy's policies — for example, abusive content or a review about something outside your control. Disagreeing with it is not grounds for removal.
How many reviews do I need before sales pick up? There is no threshold number. The first handful matter most because they move a listing from zero social proof to some — after that, consistency matters more than volume.
